Patriotism
Have you seen the soldiers dressed up in their uniforms? They’re so highly respected by the community. Why? They risk their lives every single day for their society. I’m sure you’ve seen the commercials on T.V. asking you to join the military: Do you aspire to help your country? Do you feel it is your duty to save lives? This is patriotism: citizens who take their time, and possibly their lives, for their country. They want to do whatever it takes to assist their country. There are many patriots out there now fighting for your country. Patriotism is composed of three equal components, none of which should be taken lightly. Devotion, support, and sacrifice are what make up soldier.what make up citizens devoted to their country; what make up patriotism.
Devotion is the first component of patriotism. If individuals are devoted to their country, they have deep admiration and commitment for the well being of it. Devotion is giving your time, or even your life, for your country. An example of devotion is in the book Tuesdays with Morrie. In this story, a young man named Mitch visits an old man named Morrie who is dieing. Mitch spends a lot of time with Morrie, while Morrie explains to him what it feels like to know you will die soon. Mitch is devoted to Morrie and also makes an effort to comfort him. Mitch shows patriotism because he is devoted toward caring for someone else instead of just himself. Devotion is part of patriotism because you must do whatever it takes for your country.
The next element of patriotism is support. Support is a big part of patriotism. Support can be from anything like voting or volunteering. You know the people who adopt a highway or stream? They are volunteering to keep that area nice and clean for the community. Even though they aren’t dying in battle or something as extreme as that, they are taking their time and volunteering for their country. People like these are patriots because they are helping the country become a better place. Supporting your country is a great way to participate in patriotism.
Finally, I know you have an idea in your head about what sacrifice is, but do you realize to what extent some go to help our country? Sacrifice can be anything from picking a cigarette butt up off of the ground to giving up your life for the lives of others. Citizens do these two things and things in between every day. In the book Lone Survivor, a man becomes a Navy SEAL and fights for his country through the good times and the bad. He could have done something different. He could have done something easier. No, he went through some of the most difficult situations one could imagine just to help other people. Now, that is a true patriot. He shows patriotism by risking his life every day for the good of our country.
In my opinion, patriotism is made up of three parts: devotion, support, and sacrifice. These parts are most important in helping serve our country. So, I encourage you to become a patriot. Be devoted! Do what it takes to make your country a better place for all. Support! Volunteer for your country and make it a nicer place. Sacrifice! Give up some of your time or hard work to make our country a better place. Think about it… If we all pitch in we can be the most devoted and successful country ever!
